Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
Toronto, ON
The Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto, Ontario serves as the headquarters for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The building integrates a number of broadcast studios with necessary office space and is sited on the periphery of downtown redevelopment. Because the CBC is a government institution, it has also been conceived as a civic center which places special emphasis on the multifaceted functions of the building.
Although the broadcast studios are integrated into the building, they remain visible in the structure as discrete elements. Their blank facades of blue glass and red-painted metal panels break up the long rectangular sides of the square complex. The large-scale white grid and red secondary grid unify the facades. Entrances on each side are marked with red canopies along the arcade which encircles the building. A cylindrical form of silver reflective glass stands over the main entrance. Inside, corridors converge from all public entrances at the ten-story atrium, which restates the building's exterior facades.
Kevin Stimpson was Project Architect while at Philip Johnson/John Burgee Architects for this project.
